What Is Conversion Attribution? A Plain-English Guide

June 15, 2026 · PPToGo Team

Conversion attribution is the process of crediting a conversion (a sale, signup, or lead) to the click, creator, or marketing channel that caused it. When someone buys after clicking a creator's tracking link, attribution is what connects that purchase back to the right creator so they get paid — and back to the right channel so you know what's working.

Without attribution, a sale is just a sale. With it, a sale becomes "this creator's TikTok post drove $84 in revenue" — which is what lets you pay fairly and spend smarter.

Why it matters

How attribution actually works

Most platforms use one (or a mix) of three signals:

  1. Cookie-based — a small file dropped in the buyer's browser on click, read at checkout. Reliable within a session; weaker across devices or if cookies are cleared.
  2. UTM parameters — tags added to the link URL (?utm_source=creator123) that carry through to analytics. Good for reporting; fragile if the URL is stripped or the buyer navigates away.
  3. Order-note / server-side attributes — the referring creator is written directly onto the order record at checkout. The most durable, because it survives cookie loss.

The strongest systems combine all three so that if one signal is missing, another still catches the sale. (See cookie vs UTM vs note-attributes compared for the trade-offs.)

Attribution windows and holds

Attribution isn't only who — it's also when. An attribution window (e.g., 30 days) defines how long after a click a purchase still counts. Many programs then add a hold period before paying out, so refunds and fraud can be filtered first.

Common attribution models

FAQ

Is conversion attribution the same as tracking? Tracking records the click; attribution decides which click gets credit for the resulting sale.

What's the most reliable attribution method? Server-side order attributes are the most durable, because they don't depend on the buyer's browser keeping a cookie.

How long does attribution last? As long as the attribution window — commonly 7 to 45 days after the click.

How PPToGo does it: every creator- and AI-agent-driven sale is attributed automatically with triple attribution — cookie + UTM + order-note — so credit lands on the right creator even when a browser drops the cookie. See how it works →
